Established in 1632, the University of Tartu is the oldest and largest university in Estonia. The University of Tartu (UT) is steadily moving towards becoming one of the leading institutions for innovative education and excellent research in the Nordic region. UT alone accounts for more than a half of all the doctoral degrees conferred (122 in 2022) and research publications (close to 2,300 high-level publications published in 2021 according to the Estonian Research Information System), and national R&D financing in Estonia. Cutting-edge research is conducted by 970 researchers working in 31 institutes across the University’s four faculties: the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Faculty of Social Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, and Faculty of Science and Technology. UT is active in several fields of R&D and teaching related to cryptographic protocols, security engineering, security by design, business process management, programming languages, network coding and software engineering, and distributed system development.
